Do Not Expect a Ton of DLC Characters

I’ve seen a lot of people believe that Sakurai and his team are going to pump out a ton of DLC characters. This is not the case. Today, I’m going to break down our translation, and why we decided to include “only several”. Sites like Siliconera have slightly altered the meaning, thus raising fan expectations to a much higher level.

Translation is incredibly tricky, especially when translating Japanese to English. This is because Japanese can be very ambiguous and is very relevant on context. For example, Japanese is one of the languages where pronouns are regularly dropped.

As of right now, we have seven translators working on translations. The benefit of having so many translators is that we discuss the translations before we post them on Source Gaming, thus raising the probability that our translations will be accurate. It creates considerable more work for us to check each other’s translations, but it is worth it to provide the fans with accurate, unbiased translations.

The day I first saw a “Street Fighter II” arcade cabinet installed in my local arcade, I thought to myself, What is this!? A machine with two screens, each facing towards a seated player, designed so you can play against an unseen opponent, a design that persists today. If you lose, your one play is over, if you win, you get to keep playing. The tension I felt when playing against a stranger for the first time was incomparable to when I played my friends, and my heart started to race. This is groundbreaking![1] I felt as if a new way of playing games had introduced itself into arcades. This was over ten years ago.

Winning and Losing

In the previous column, I wrote that I “play video games every single day [1].” That quickly turned out to be a lie. Currently, I don’t have any days off to play video games, and I’m in full work mode. Working is hard, but it’s a lot of fun.

Now, prehistorically, or even far before the humans were born, organisms have participated in the competition of life. I feel that no matter how far culture may advance, “winning” and “losing” will be powerful stimuli that are engraved into our DNA.
